Strix’ journey in Amazon S3 cost optimization
Strix is a leading security and monitoring solutions company with over 20 years of experience, specializing in protecting vehicles, homes, businesses, and individuals through innovative technologies like big data, analytics, and machine learning.
With a presence in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay, Strix has positioned itself as an industry benchmark, providing security and peace of mind to more than 750,000 customers. Its platform, focused on delivering high-quality service, continually seeks to optimize processes to meet the demands of an increasingly technological and demanding market.
Strix is a leading security and monitoring services company operating in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay, providing advanced solutions for protecting vehicles, homes, and businesses. To serve its diverse customer base, Strix offers two main platforms: Strix Flotas, designed for businesses managing large fleets of vehicles, and Strix Consumer, aimed at individual customers looking to safeguard their personal assets.
During a cost and resource optimization analysis, the Strix team noticed a concerning issue: although Strix Flotas stored a significantly larger volume of data, its Amazon S3 storage costs were surprisingly lower than those of Strix Consumer. This discrepancy raised a red flag, as it didn’t make sense for the platform with less data to incur disproportionately high expenses.
This discovery prompted Strix to thoroughly investigate the Consumer platform to uncover the root causes of these high costs and implement solutions to optimize their cloud spending.
A thorough analysis revealed that the primary source of this additional cost stemmed from a high number of GET operations and other frequent requests, many of which were unnecessary. This led to unexpected additional charges on the company’s monthly bill, impacting the operational efficiency and economic sustainability of the platform.
This discovery prompted Strix to seek effective solutions to optimize its cloud infrastructure, reducing costs without sacrificing the functionality or performance of its services.
Addressing this challenge was crucial for Strix to maintain operational efficiency and optimize its cloud infrastructure costs.
The company faced clear and urgent challenges:
We analyzed operations generating high costs in Amazon S3 and proposed strategies to optimize them.
We reviewed and corrected AWS Backup configurations that were performing unnecessary backups of unused buckets.
We improved backup rules and S3 operations without compromising functionality or performance.
DinoCloud provided a comprehensive solution to optimize storage costs and enhance Strix’s operational efficiency.
The strategy began with a thorough analysis of Amazon S3 operations to identify the most significant cost drivers.
Initial Analysis
To detect the most expensive S3 operations, DinoCloud used tools like Amazon S3 Analytics, Storage Class Analysis, Cost Explorer, and CloudTrail. This helped trace the most frequent requests, such as ReadACL and ReadObjectTagging. During this analysis, they also discovered that AWS Backup was generating unnecessary GetObjectACL events, contributing to increased costs.
Backup Optimization
The backup system was optimized by adjusting backup rules to only create copies of production buckets, eliminating unnecessary backups of test buckets. Additionally, the strategy was shifted from periodic snapshots to continuous backups, reducing data duplication and improving storage infrastructure management efficiency.
Implementation of Best Practices
As part of the solution, lifecycle rules were configured in Amazon S3 to move objects to more cost-effective storage classes based on access patterns. This implementation optimized storage costs by ensuring that only essential objects remained in more expensive storage classes.
At DinoCloud, we specialize in transforming a company’s current infrastructure into a modern, scalable, high-performance, and cost-effective system designed to meet business objectives.
